Upper Room: Be Confident

The Lord said to Moses, “Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” - Exodus 4:12 (NIV)

While traveling for missions in South America, I struggled to learn a new language. I had no confidence when it came to communicating, but I pushed myself, knowing the Lord wanted me to share the good news with others.

However, one time when a young woman asked me to lead her in a prayer of confession and commitment, I almost gave up because my Spanish was so bad. I told her that I was going to find someone else to help her, but she shook her head in protest. She told me that she understood me completely and that she was ready to accept Jesus into her life. The Holy Spirit had been at work between us in spite of my feelings of inadequacy about my language skills. I didn’t have to be fluent for God to make a difference. I needed only the willingness to be a channel for God and to be confident in God’s ability.

I can empathize with Moses’ hesitation at God’s command for him to go to Pharaoh and ask for the Israelites’ freedom (see Ex. 3:7-11). In ’s scripture reading, Moses insisted that he was not eloquent enough for such a mission, and he felt that God should send someone else. When I became a Christian, I realized that God is with me wherever I am, and the assurance God gave Moses also extends to you and me.

's Prayer

Dear Father, you are able to do far more than we can even imagine. Help us to speak up and share your goodness with others whenever we have the opportunity. Amen.
